New Brunswick, NJ — A Rutgers-New Brunswick faculty member and two alumnae — Fernando Muzzio, Jennifer Therkorn and Annmarie Previte Sabb — of the university are among those who were honored last night by the New Jersey Inventors Hall of Fame, which is housed with the Stevens Institute of Technology.
Fernando Muzzio, a distinguished professor of chemical and biochemical engineering in Rutgers School of Engineering, received the organization’s Inventor of the Year award.
A resident of Pennington, Muzzio was nominated for his work on “lynchpin inventions for advanced products and processes for pharmaceutical, chemical and petrochemical industries.”
Muzzio directs Rutgers’ Engineering Research Center on Structured Organic Particulate Systems (C-SOPS). Funded by the National Science Foundation, C-SOPS has received extensive support from corporations such as Janssen Supply Chain, a unit of Johnson & Johnson.

Muzzio directs Rutgers’ Engineering Research Center on Structured Organic Particulate Systems (C-SOPS). Funded by the National Science Foundation, C-SOPS has received extensive support from corporations such as Janssen Supply Chain, a unit of Johnson & Johnson.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration also has awarded $5 million in grants to further the continuous manufacturing research, which is working with the federal agency on associated regulatory considerations.
The technology is expected to enable companies to deliver medications to patients more quickly with less waste and lower manufacturing costs.
Jennifer Therkorn, a Maryland resident who recently completed a doctorate in Rutgers’ School of Environmental and Biological Sciences, will receive the Hall of Fame’s Graduate Student award.
Therkorn was nominated for her research and patented work relating to sampling of airborne biological particles. Therkorn has received numerous awards, including Rutgers’ Eagleton Fellowship and the Feldstein Memorial Scholarship for Air Quality from the Air and Waste Management Association.
Therkorn is a post-doctoral fellow at the Johns Hopkins University’s Applied Physics Laboratory. Therkorn holds a bachelor’s degree in biology from Lehigh University and a master’s in public health degree from the Rutgers School of Public Health.
Annmarie Previte Sabb, an alumnae of Rutgers’ Douglass College, 1964, and resident of Pennington, will receive the “Innovators Award” from the N.J. Inventors Hall of Fame.
Sabb, who retired in 2006, had a long career as a pharmaceutical research scientist and medicinal chemist working in the areas of muscarinic agents for memory disorders, Alzheimer’s disease and the modulation of serotonin receptors of the treatment of schizophrenia, depression and anxiety.
At Wyeth Research in Princeton, NJ, she was awarded the Wyeth Research Patent Award (1997-2005), and the Wyeth Special Recognition Award (2005).
In 2004 she was elected to Marquis Who’s Who in America, in 2010 to Who’s Who of American Women, and in 2011 to the Who’s Who in Science and Engineering.
