Trenton, NJ - Haskell Berman, a co-founder of the Innovation NJ Coalition, who has spent nearly 40 years in New Jersey state government, politics and public affairs, recently announced his departure from the coalition and as Senior Vice President – State Affairs for the HealthCare Institute of New Jersey (HINJ), a trade association representing New Jersey’s research-based biopharmaceutical and medical technology industries.
In a letter to the coalition, Mr. Berman writes "I am writing to share the news that I will be leaving HINJ at the end of June. I want to thank you for joining our coalition and for your contributions and support over the past 14 years. We can be proud of the many accomplishments the coalition has achieved, including proposing and getting the state to establish the ResearchwithNJ.com website to foster greater collaboration between business and our higher education institutions to keep research from leaving the state. I am particularly proud of the innovation community that we have built and the collaboration that has resulted from all of you networking with one another."

"I want to thank Melanie Willoughby and Charlene Brown, my Innovation NJ co-founders, as well as Sara Gibson and Andrew Musick for their leadership, contributions and advocacy that jump-started the innovation movement in New Jersey. I also want to thank Tyler Seville for creating and continuing to publish the Innovation NJ e-newsletter and assistance in running the coalition."

HINJ will continue to manage Innovation NJ and additional information on future meetings will be forthcoming.

Mr. Berman began his career as Chief of Staff to Assemblyman Bob Franks and served in a variety of senior staff positions in the New Jersey General Assembly Republican Office, including Director of Policy & Planning, Director of Intergovernmental Relations, Director of the Office of the Speaker and Deputy Executive Director. He also managed the Assembly Policy & Rules Committee and Assembly Education Committee.

In 1990, Mr. Berman managed the successful campaign for re-election of Congressman Dean Gallo, and in 1991, he served on the staff of the New Jersey Republican State Committee, producing the first grassroots party convention in modern New Jersey political history.

From 1997 to 2000, Mr. Berman served as Vice President of Capital Public Affairs, one of New Jersey’s leading government relations firms.

He sits on the Board of ENGAGE NJ, and served as a Trustee of the NJ Society of Economic, Environmental Development (NJSEED), Trustee of the NJ Policy Research Organization (NJPRO), member of the External Advisory Board of the Rutgers Institute for Food, Nutrition and Health, and member of the Monmouth University Board of Trustees Government Relations Committee.

Haskell Berman can be reached at [email protected].
