Rowan College at Burlington County introduces new Magnetic Resonance Certificate

Pemberton, NJ - This fall, Rowan College at Burlington County is starting the first magnetic resonance (MR) credit-based program in New Jersey for technologists who are certified by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) and want to advance their career by becoming trained in MR.

Trenton, NJ - Despite what the US News & World Report’s annual rankings says, New Jersey's universities offer a serious return on investment. According to a new report by the Business Insider, New Jersey has several underrated college in America with the New Jersey Institute of Technology at the top. These claims come their PayScale College Salary Report, which ranks colleges and universities based on their graduates’ mid-career earnings.

NJIT Conducts Historic Unmanned Aircraft Flights over the Atlantic Ocean

Newark, NJ - The flights, conducted by researchers from NJIT’s Crisis Communication Center and NJII’s Homeland Security and Defense Innovation Lab and their partners in late January, were historic for the State of New Jersey. The university and its partners are the first to conduct unmanned aircraft systems (UAS) flights in the state under a Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) program to test the feasibility of safely integrating drones into national airspace and to assess the research and operational capabilities of communications and mapping sensors aboard the craft.

NJIT offers training to cut costs for energy and water wasted

Newark, NJ, December 9, 2014 – According to NJIT’s News Room, “NJIT’s Center for Building Knowledge (CBK) and the Consortium for Building Energy Innovation (CBEI) have launched an initiative that can significantly cut costs for energy and water wasted due to building inefficiencies. It’s the Certificate of Proficiency in Benchmarking, a national, online, interactive training and certificate program for professionals responsible for tracking the energy and water consumed by buildings.”

“The new program is designed to educate users through a no-cost online training component on how to accurately collect building energy and water benchmarking data and use the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s ENERGY STAR™ Portfolio Manager® tool to benchmark building performance, and for a fee, certify participants who successfully complete the training and exam.”

“Issued by the CBK, which is part of the College of Architecture and Design, the Certificate of Proficiency in Benchmarking is intended to be a national standard for benchmarking professionals to ensure quality of self-reported benchmarking data. The ENERGY STAR Portfolio Manager tool has most commonly been used voluntarily, but cities, states and other jurisdictions are increasingly requiring its use to benchmark private-sector properties.”

Rowan starts biomedical engineering program and appoints chairman

Glassboro, NJ, December 9, 2014 – Rowan University welcomed its first class of biomedical engineering students this year as its nationally recognized College of Engineering recently created the Biomedical Engineering Department. The program is at the intersection of medicine and biology, with the focus on the improvement of heath care systems and is modeled after the proven hands-on, real-world, project-based curriculum of Rowan’s existing engineering programs.

Rowan University also named Dr. Mark Byrne as professor and inaugural chairman of the new department. A leader in the field of biomaterials engineering, controlled therapeutic delivery, pharmaceutical engineering, polymer engineering and medical devices, Byrne has won numerous awards for his teaching and research and has licensed a number of innovative technologies.

“Dr. Byrne has the education, experience and credentials to not only further develop and lead our new biomedical engineering program but also to nurture our student researchers in a very demanding and constantly evolving field,” said Dr. Anthony Lowman, dean of the College of Engineering. “His background is an excellent fit for a school that will continue to grow its focus on research.”

According to the New Jersey Business Magazine, “An inventor with eight issued patents and another four pending, Byrne is co-founder and chief technology officer of OcuMedic, Inc., a drug-delivery company in Auburn, Alabama. Numerous government agencies, including the National Institutes of Health, the National Science Foundation and U.S. Department of Education, have funded his research. He has published more than 75 peer-reviewed publications with more than1,500 citations and has given more than 210 scientific conference presentations and invited lectures at companies, universities and international meetings.”

“I am thrilled to build a nationally and internationally recognized program in biomedical engineering at Rowan,” Byrne said. “It is a tremendous opportunity, and we have ambitious plans to grow the undergraduate and graduate programs as well as conduct leading innovative research and teaching. New computational imaging concentration in Translational Science degree

New Brunswick, NJ, December 1, 2014 – The Rutgers Graduate School of Biomedical Science is now offering a new degree and concentration in clinical and translational science research. Computational Imaging and Biopharmaceutical Sciences (CIBS) concentration will now be offered the within the Master of Science in Clinical and Translational Science Program.

The CIBS concentration is designed for students wishing to specialize in computer generated image reconstruction for understanding visualization of normal and diseased organ function and accurate localization of tumors in organs. Emphasis is placed on understanding aspects of clinical research including drug development, biology of disease and functional imaging coupled with structural aspects obtained from computer generated image reconstruction to arrive at the final reconstructed 3D image.

The purpose of functional and structural image reconstruction is to provide health care providers with an accurate location for treatment as well as for monitoring therapeutic outcome. The CIBS concentration will utilize expertise of faculty at GSBS, RU and the Biopharmaceutical industry. In addition to courses offered in the MSCTS program, students will learn several imaging modalities used in medical imaging and the algorithms used for accurate image reconstruction in courses offered by the Computer Science Department at RU. State of the art instrumentation and image reconstruction methods will be taught with students also learning the biology and science behind many of the imaging techniques used in clinical practice.
