Washington D.C. - Conducted by the National League of Cities (NLC), the Local Economic Conditions Survey 2015 asks government officials in more than 250 cities across the nation to assess their local economic conditions. Painting a broad picture of the economic health of cities, Cities and Unequal Recovery highlights key points from the most recent survey. The report finds that economic conditions over the past year have improved in nearly all cities, with 28 percent of city leaders indicating that conditions have improved greatly and 64 percent reporting slight improvements. In the 2013 Local Economic Conditions Survey, just 8 percent of cities reported greatly improved local economic conditions from the year before.

Washington D.C. - According to Sophie Quinton of Pew Charitable Trust, "New College of Florida doesn’t offer pre-professional degrees, like nursing or engineering. Students choose the public liberal arts college because they want an intellectual experience. Many take a year off after graduation to pursue research or community service. Yet last fall, New College opened a flashy new career center on its Sarasota campus. It needed to prove to the state that it was helping students find jobs and graduate on time, or risk losing $1.1 million in state aid. “That’s a big deal for us,” David Gulliver, media relations coordinator for New College, said of the money.

Trenton, NJ – Legislation that would change New Jersey laws and regulations to help businesses take advantage of crowdfunding passed the Senate last Thursday. Specifically, S-712/A-2073 would provide exemptions from registration with the NJ Bureau of Securities for companies that want to offer intrastate crowdfunding investment opportunities. The total investment cannot exceed $1 million, and the investment from any single purchaser is capped at $5,000.

The New Jersey Cybersecurity & Communications Integration Cell (NJCCIC) has released its latest bulletin, which details the vulnerability of the systems that control the northeast electrical grid. A weakness that allows hackers to exploit font drivers in certain Windows servers was found, and multiple vulnerabilities in Adobe and Microsoft software were discovered. NJBIA is working with the NJCCIC to keep businesses up to date on the latest cyber threats and the tools available to fight them. The cell was launched by Governor Christie this past May.
Trenton, NJ - The New Jersey Economic Development Authority (EDA) continues its series highlighting how entrepreneurs and investors are helping to build New Jersey’s technology ecosystem: In 1999, scientist-turned-entrepreneur Navneet Puri earned his PhD in Pharmaceutical Sciences from Rutgers University and went on to found InnoPharma, Inc. in Piscataway just a few years later. The research and development pharmaceutical company, focused on developing complex generic and innovative specialty products in injectable and ophthalmic dosage forms, was ultimately acquired by pharmaceutical giant Pfizer last year. Under Puri’s leadership, InnoPharma had more than 30 products in various stages of development, including 10 generic products that had received Food and Drug Administration approval.
