The Garden State, which has 17 fiber providers, is third in the country when it comes to the percentage of population covered by fiber, according to broadbandnow.com.With about 63 percent of its population covered, it sits behind only Rhode Island (98 percent) and Oregon (77 percent).
For Lt. Gov. Kim Guadagno, that was both a point of pride and the source of a challenge when she spoke at last week's ceremony announcing Newark Venture Partners' $50 million fund and accelerator program.
"We're third in the country for fiber optics, behind, you would think, some of our sister border states--but no, behind Rhode Island and Oregon," she said. "And we are here today to move to first place, but we can't do that without the help of funding."
