Hackettstown, NJ ― David P. Haney, who has been vice president for academic affairs at Emory & Henry College in Virginia, will become Centenary College's 13th president starting July 1, the board of trustees announced Monday.
Jim Deegan reports on LeHighValleyLive.com that Haney, 63, has spent four years at Emory & Henry in Emory, Va., and before that worked nine years as a vice provost and English department chairman at Appalachian State University.
Centenary launched a search for a new president last June when President Barbara-Jayne Lewthwaite announced she would be stepping down, with plans to rejoin the college faculty. She has been Centenary's president since 2009.

In a statement released by Centenary, Haney said he was honored to have been chosen.
“Everyone from Centenary and Hackettstown has been very welcoming during the entire search process, and my wife Lisa and I are eager to become active members of our new community,” he said.
Haney was a faculty member for 12 years at Auburn University. At Emory & Henry, he expanded the college through graduate programs in health education and developed a school of health sciences that started last fall, according to Centenary's trustees.
He has master's and doctorate degrees in English from the University at Buffalo and a bachelor's degree in English from Macalester College. He was a professional bluegrass musician in the 1980s with Joe Val and the New England Bluegrass Boys.
Centenary leaders said they were delighted to welcome him.
“Dr. Haney has the stellar reputation of being an excellent administrator and an effecive, collaborative leader,” said Wolfgang Gstattenbauer, who headed the presidential search committee and is chairman of Centenary's board of trustees.
“He has a strong reputation for openness, collegial decision-making and integrity. He also brings a wealth of knowledge of institutional fundraising and an understanding of the equine business. We are pleased to have Dr. Haney serving at the helm of this institution as we fulfill our future goals over the next decade.”
