Montclair, NJ ― Dr. Tamara Lucas in May was named the dean of the Montclair State University College of Education and Human Services.

“I am pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Lucas to this position,” said Montclair State University President Susan A. Cole.  “Her dedication to the institution and to the College of Education and Human Services has helped foster continued growth and increased recognition of its programs nationwide. I am confident this positive trend will continue under her leadership.”

Lucas has previously served the College of Education and Human Services as acting dean, associate dean and professor since arriving at the institution in 1997.

As both acting dean and associate dean, she led major efforts to bring recognition to the College’s respective disciplines, securing more than $4.5 million in grant funding since 2014 and proposing more than $10.5 million in funding for the 2015 fiscal year.

During her time at Montclair State, the College has also developed four doctoral degree programs: counseling; family studies; teacher education and teacher development; and pedagogy and philosophy.
Montclair State University is one of only two institutions in New Jersey to be nationally ranked by U.S. News & World Report's “Best Education Schools” at No. 93 in the country, with individual programs in elementary and secondary teacher education each ranked No. 14 in the 2017 results and in the Top 10 nationwide among public institutions.

The accolade makes Montclair State the only New Jersey institution to be ranked in the top 20 in both categories.

“I am honored to be selected to serve as the dean of the College of Education and Human Services,” said Lucas.  “Not only does the College have a long history of highly regarded and, in recent years, nationally ranked programs in teacher preparation, but we also have several programs in other fields with growing national reputations as well as internationally recognized scholars in both education and human services.

“The recognition we have received in recent years reflects the increasingly important work of our nationally recognized scholars, the high quality of our academic programs, and the impact our faculty, staff and students have on the communities we serve. I am excited to be leading the College in the next phase of its development.”

Dr. Lucas, who received her PhD from Stanford University, is a nationally recognized scholar in the education of English language learners and the preparation of linguistically responsive teachers.

She is the author of several books, most recently, Teacher Preparation for Linguistically Diverse Classrooms: A Resource for Teacher Educators.

Dr. Lucas has shared her scholarship in more than 150 journal articles, book chapters and presentations, and has served as a reviewer for several top journals and foundations including the American Educational Research Journal and the Journal of Teacher Education.
