Newark, NJ — The New Jersey Business & Industry Association (NJBIA), the New Jersey Manufacturing Extension Program (NJMEP) and New Jersey Business magazine named Donald H. Sebastian, Ph.D., President & CEO at New Jersey Innovation Institute, to the Made in New Jersey Honor Roll.

In addition to Dr. Sebastian, others added to the Made in New Jersey Honor Roll included Untied States Senator Cory Booker, New Jersey Lieutenant Governor Kim Guadagno and United States Congressman Rodney Frelinghuysen.

Dr. Sebastian has been a staunch advocate for the importance of manufacturing to a robust technology-based economy for over 30 years.

He was a member of the Stevens Institute faculty team that created the Polymer Processing Institute and the NJ Polymer Extension Center in 1983 as a new model for serving the materials supply, equipment and product manufacturing sectors.

In 1988, Sebastian co-founded the Design and Manufacturing Institute at Stevens which developed pioneering approaches to integrated product design and manufacturing.
In 1995 he joined NJIT and authored the winning proposal to form the NJ Manufacturing Extension Program (NJMEP) as part of the national network created by NIST in 1990, served as its start-up director and remains as the only continuously serving NJMEP Board member.

As leader of the university’s research programs he has overseen a variety of manufacturing initiatives assisting the state’s production sector from new business starts grown in the NJIT incubator to the supply chain for global OEMs.

Since forming the New Jersey Innovation Institute (NJII) an NJIT corporation in 2014, the organization has undertaken several major programs directed towards the manufacturing sector.

The defense department sponsored MarketShift program identifies, fortifies and diversifies the defense industry supply chain while programs with the army bring new manufacturing concepts to the national industrial base.

To support the state’s pharmaceutical industry, NJII led the effort to secure the designation as the country’s center of excellence for biopharmaceutical manufacturing as part of the National Network for Manufacturing Innovation.

The proposal is a finalist for a $70M award from NIST with announcement due by the end of the year.

Frank Robinson, vice president of government affairs at NJBIA, said, “We have recognized for many, many years, the importance that manufacturing has in the state of New Jersey, in terms of our economy, jobs, and just – overall – making the state of New Jersey a better place.”

New Jersey has approximately 250,000 manufacturing jobs and nearly 11,000 manufacturing companies.

According to John W. Kennedy CEO of NJMEP, "We accepted nominations for Public, Elected, and State Educational individuals and groups and received 33 nominations.  Those individuals receiving the most nominations were then selected for inclusion in the Made in New Jersey Honor Roll.  Dr. Sebastian is well known for his long-standing commitment to New Jersey manufacturing.”

The New Jersey Innovation Institute (NJII) is an NJIT corporation that applies the intellectual and technological resources of the state’s science and technology university to challenges identified by industry partners.

Through its Innovation Labs (iLabs), NJII brings NJIT expertise to key economic sectors, including healthcare delivery systems, bio-pharmaceutical production, civil infrastructure, defense and homeland security, and financial services.
