Newark, NJ — The Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst (MDL) Commanders recently selected Ian Trammell, executive director of economic and cluster development at the New Jersey Innovation Institute (NJII) to participate in its Honorary Commanders program.
Trammell was formally inducted into the program at the Joint Base Honorary Commanders’ Induction Ceremony on September 29, 2016.
The Honorary Commanders Program facilitates communication between the MDL and surrounding communities by showcasing joint base capabilities, future leaders, and the caliber of men and women serving at the base.
Honorary Commanders are selected based on their record of service to the local community and tradition of excellence in their profession.
“I see this relationship as an opportunity to share the work of NJII, NJIT, and in fact higher education in New Jersey with the commanders and service people of the joint base. I envision many ways to build a diverse network between NJII and the military here in our state,” said Trammell.

As an Honorary Commander, Trammell will be teamed with an MDL commander for a renewable one-year term and given base access throughout his tenure.
Additionally, he will have an opportunity to participate in unique military operations and witness time-honored traditions typically reserved for those in military uniform.
The Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst is the nation’s only tri-service joint base.
Spanning 42,000 contiguous acres, it is home to active-duty, Reserve, and National Guard service members from the U.S. Air Force, Army, Marines, Navy, and the Coast Guard. The base is the largest employer in New Jersey after the state government, employing more than 65,000 people with a $6.9 billion economic impact to the region.
