NJ Spotlight: All the Presidents’ Pay and Perks at New Jersey’s Public Colleges

​Trenton, NJ ― Mark Lagerkvist reports in NJ Spotlight on salaries and benefits awarded to the presidents of New Jersey’s public colleges.  Follow this link to the main story.
 
No other public officials in New Jersey receive the levels of compensation that many college presidents enjoy — not even Gov. Chris Christie or state Supreme Court justices.
 
Ranked by salary, here is the list of what the presidents get at New Jersey’s 30 public universities and colleges.  This rundown includes links to each executive’s contract, obtained by NJ Spotlight under the Open Public Records Act:
 
1. Robert Barchi, Rutgers University — $676,260 annual salary plus performance bonuses, housing, car, and one-year paid sabbatical leave.
 
2. Joel Bloom, New Jersey Institute of Technology — $555,000 salary plus performance bonuses, retention incentive payments, housing allowance, car, and a two-year paid post-presidential position as president emeritus. ​
​3. Ali Houshmand, Rowan University — $550,000 salary plus performance bonuses, car allowance, and housing.
 
4. Susan Cole, Montclair State University — $403,650 salary plus performance bonuses, housing, car and one-year paid sabbatical as president emeritus.
 
5. R. Barbara Gitenstein, The College of New Jersey — $355,341 salary plus performance bonuses, retention incentive payments, deferred compensation, housing, lifetime health insurance for Gitenstein and her family’ and a college car she gets to keep when she leaves TCNJ.
 
6. Peter Mercer, Ramapo College — $337,370 salary plus performance bonuses, deferred compensation, car and housing with additional living allowance.
 
7. George Pruitt, Thomas Edison State University — $337,000 salary plus performance bonuses, deferred compensation, housing allowance, car, and a one-year paid post-presidential sabbatical, followed by a five-year paid fellowship.
 
8. Kathleen Waldron, William Paterson University — $324,000 salary plus performance bonuses, deferred compensation, choice of housing or allowance, choice of car or allowance, and one-year paid sabbatical.
 
9. Harvey Kesselman, Stockton University — $320,000 salary plus performance bonuses, deferred compensation, housing allowance, and car.
 
10. Dawood Farahi, Kean University — $302,550 salary plus performance bonuses, $36,000 annual entertainment allowance, housing, choice of car or allowance and one-year paid sabbatical.
 
11. Sue Henderson, New Jersey City University — $295,000 salary plus performance bonuses, housing allowance, car, and one-year paid sabbatical.
 
12. Steven Rose, Passaic County Community College — $256,016 salary plus annual contribution to Rose’s annuity (10 percent of salary) and a car.
 
13. Gale E. Gibson, Essex County College — $255,000 salary plus performance bonuses, deferred compensation, housing and a car. Gibson was dismissed as president by the college’s Board of Trustees in April.
 
14. Jon Larson, Ocean County College — $240,000 salary plus deferred compensation, annuity contributions, and a car.
 
15. Margaret McMenamin, Union County College — $231,100 salary plus performance bonuses, annuity contributions, housing allowance, and a car.
 
16. Glen Gabert, Hudson County Community College — $224,536 salary plus performance bonuses, annuity contributions, and a car.
 
17. Kaye Walter, Bergen Community College — $224,000 salary plus performance bonuses, housing allowance, and a car.
 
18. Edward Yaw, Morris County College — $220,685 salary plus annuity contributions and a car.
 
19. Michael McDonough, Raritan Valley Community College — $220,000 salary plus annuity contributions, housing allowance, and car allowance.
 
20. Joann La Perla-Morales, Middlesex County College — $202,684 salary plus annuity contributions, and housing.
 
21. Maureen Murphy, Brookdale Community College — $200,000 salary and annuity contributions.
 
22. Paul Drayton, Rowan College at Burlington County — $198,826 salary.
 
23. Raymond Yannuzzi, Camden County College — $195,732 salary and annuity contributions.
 
24. Peter Mora, Atlantic Cape Community College — $190,562 salary and annuity contributions.
 
25. Jianping Wang, Mercer County Community College — $182,000 plus performance bonuses, housing allowance and car allowance.
 
26. William Austin, Warren County Community College — $177,275 salary plus performance bonuses and housing allowance.
 
27. Frederick Keating, Rowan College at Gloucester County — $175,000 salary plus performance bonuses, annuity contributions and a car.
 
28. Michael Gorman, Salem Community College — $170,000 salary.
 
29. Jon Connolly, Sussex County Community College — $160,000 salary plus performance bonuses and a car.
 
30. Shelly Schneider, Cumberland County College — $110,400 salary. As the college’s interim president, Schneider’s contract restricts her from becoming the chief executive on a permanent basis.
