Linden, NJ - Public school teachers from Linden and Rahway are working developing curriculum for the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS). The instructors from the area are part of a consortium of teachers who have formed a professional learning community to study "A Framework for K-12 Science Education."
According to myCentralJersey.com, "The framework is a publication developed by the National Research Council (NRC) that identifies and describes the latest research about what works in K-12 science education and is the foundation for the NGSS. Recently adopted by the state of New Jersey, the NGSS will be implemented in secondary classrooms in the fall of 2016 and in elementary classrooms beginning in the fall of 2017. These study groups will meet each month for two hours after school to discuss the framework and how to best prepare for the implementation of the NGSS."
According to the website devoted to the NGSS, www.nextgenscience.org, "States have previously used the 'National Science Education Standards' from the NRC and 'Benchmarks for Science Literacy' from the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) to guide the development of their current state standards. While these documents have proven to be both high quality and durable, they are around 15 years old."
