The IBNR was created to be the primary home for all neuroscience initiatives at NJIT, functioning as an umbrella and organizing framework for diverse areas, from basic research that looks at how animal behavior is generated in the nervous system, to mathematical modeling of neuronal oscillations, to brain imaging, to neurorehabilitation.
The Institute’s founding co-directors, Farzan Nadim, a professor of neurobiology in the department of mathematics, and Namas Chandra, a biomedical engineer, reflect its scope.
As the field itself, NJIT’s expanding cluster in this area includes an array of biochemists, physicists, mathematicians, biomedical engineers and computer scientists with diverse perspectives but complementary goals.
“NJIT is proud to initiate the IBNR to promote collaborative research and training in brain injury, neural engineering, neurobiology and computational neuroscience,” said Atam Dhawan, vice provost for research at NJIT.
“The IBNR facilitates interdisciplinary research, innovation and technology development to understand brain and neurological functions, and develop neurophysiological models for brain injuries and disorders to help diagnosis, treatment and therapeutic interventions,” Dhawan continued.
“NJIT collaborates with diverse research and medical institutions, industry partners, and rehabilitation centers in basic, applied and medical sciences and engineering disciplines including neuroscience, neurobiology, neurophysiology, biology, mathematical sciences, and chemical, electrical and biomedical engineering as well as neurology, radiology and medicine.”
Col. Sidney Hinds, M.D., MC, the Brain Health Research Program Coordinator of the DoD Blast Injury Research Program, will deliver the President’s Forum keynote lecture at 10:45 a.m., followed by a poster walk-through session and tours of the IBNR research centers and laboratories.
