Glassboro, NJ - Rowan University has appointed Dr. Karen Magee-Sauer as dean of its College of Science & Mathematics. She served as interim dean of the college since July 2014, and she was chair of the Physics Department for six years prior to accepting that role.
“After evaluating the three finalists, it was determined that the strongest person for the job actually had been leading the College of Science & Mathematics for the past eight months,” said Dr. Ali Houshmand, president of Rowan. “While Dr. Magee-Sauer did not apply for the position, she has been an exceptional leader in the interim role. She has the added benefit of familiarity with all of our campuses, Rowan’s role in education and the economy, and the needs of our region.”
In addition to serving as dean of the College of Science & Mathematics, she will be dean of the School of Biomedical Science & Health Professions. The college is home to the departments of Biological Sciences, Chemistry & Biochemistry, Computer Science, Mathematics, Nursing, Physics & Astronomy, and Psychology. The school offers departments in Biomedical and Translational Sciences and in Health and Exercise Science.
“This college is not just an integral part of our University; it also is incredibly important to our region and our society as a whole,” Houshmand said. “We have a huge need to provide first-class educations for students in STEM fields – science, technology, engineering and mathematics.” Statistics indicate there were approximately 7.4 million workers in STEM fields in the United States in 2012. By 2018, that number is expected to grow to more than 8.6 million.
Magee-Sauer, a resident of Wilmington, Delaware, earned a B.S. in physics from the University of Virginia, Charlottesville, and an M.S. and Ph.D. in physics from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
