Whippany, NJ — Michael Ricciardelli reports that Dr. Bonita Stanton, founding dean of the Seton Hall-Hackensack-Meridian School of Medicine, has been honored by the Tri-County Scholarship Fund.
Dean Stanton’s award will be presented at the Fund's 36th annual Gala Awards Dinner at the Hanover Marriott in Whippany, celebrating more than three decades of helping financially needy students in Morris, Passaic and Sussex counties on November 6, 2017.
The mission of Tri-County Scholarship Fund is to provide financial support for deserving students to obtain a quality, values-based education in accredited private elementary and secondary schools.

The mission of Tri-County Scholarship Fund is to provide financial support for deserving students to obtain a quality, values-based education in accredited private elementary and secondary schools.
Each year Tri-County awards Kindergarten — 12th grade scholarships to 400 students at over 50 different schools, the majority of which are parochial. Over the past 35+ years, $26 million has been raised by the organization and more than 31,000 scholarships awarded to needy children.
Scholarship recipients have gone on to the top colleges in New Jersey and throughout the country with Tri-County graduates currently attending Georgetown, Rutgers, Notre Dame, Seton Hall University, Colgate, UCLA, Cornell, and Penn State, to name just a few.
Noting the importance of erasing disparities in medical service due to socio-economic status, Dean Stanton has repeatedly noted the importance of recruiting top-notch medical students from throughout the community regardless of financial status.
In addition, Dean Stanton has called for the integration of community care into the new School of Medicine's curriculum — an innovative approach known as the "Human Dimension," which includes the assignment of three to five different families from the surrounding communities to each student.
Students will follow, monitor and administer healthcare to "their families" throughout their entire medical education, helping to ground students within the day-to-day lives of the communities they serve.
Her approach to the teaching and practice of medicine has garnered widespread attention within the medical community, the media and the Tri-County Scholarship Fund.
Dean Stanton said, "I am truly grateful to receive this award. The Tri-County Scholarship fund changes the lives of families in the most basic and meaningful ways— they help to provide quality education opportunities to those who have great need for them.”
"It is this kind of community caritas — fulfilling the real needs of real people in the neighborhoods we serve— that is the bedrock of a caring and just society. It is profoundly humbling to be honored by those who do such honorable work,” Dean Stanton added.
According to Tim Duffy, Tri-County Chairman and Managing Partner of Coughlin Duffy in Morristown, "Tri-County is currently able to fund scholarships for 400 students each year, but we have another 2,000 students on the waiting list. I call this 'the cause of all causes' because I can think of nothing more meaningful than helping needy children to get an education and a better life. By helping one child at a time, the ripple effect is enormous — touching the family, the community, and improving the lives of generations to come."
