The sources, who requested anonymity because they are not authorized to speak on the subject, said the university also has suspended its search for a new provost.
The search for a new provost began in December 2016. Last September, former Provost Larry A. Robinson announced his decision to retire at the end of the fall semester.
Esteban assumed the role of Seton Hall president in 2011. Prior to this role, he was provost and chief academic officer at the university.
Esteban received his doctorate in administration from the graduate school of management at the University of California at Irvine and a master of science in Japanese business studies from Chaminade University in Honolulu, Hawaii.
Esteban’s last day will be June 30.
