In the first U.S. News & World Report ranking of the 50 U.S. states, released Tuesday morning, New Jersey came in at No. 14 overall. Even better, it ranked higher than New York (No. 17), Delaware (20) and Pennsylvania (30).
The states were judged on seven categories: Health care, education, crime and corrections, infrastructure, opportunity, economy and government.
With the exception of government, where New Jersey ranked dead last, at No. 50, the state fared very well.
- Education: No. 2 (behind Massachusetts)
- Crime: No. 4 (behind Vermont, Maine and Rhode Island)
- Health Care: No. 8 (Massachusetts was No. 1)
- Infrastructure: No. 18 (Oregon was No. 1)
- Economy: No. 25 (Colorado was No. 1)
- Opportunity: No. 27 (New Hampshire was No. 1)
- Government: No. 50 (Indiana was No. 1)
- Massachusetts finished No. 1 overall, followed by New Hampshire, Minnesota, North Dakota and Washington.
